visa application form

Singapore is a great choice for higher studies; not just for its top universities, but also for the many benefits it offers beyond academics. This city-state is clean, safe, and there is a lot to learn. So, if you’re thinking of studying here, finding out the rules and the steps to apply for the student pass is crucial. This can be a little bit tricky, and this guide will help you sort it all out.

Understanding the Student Pass Requirement

You must apply for a Student Pass before studying in Singapore. This is a required document for the students who will undertake a full-time course. So, without it, you will not be allowed to go or remain in Singapore for the purpose of studying. The Student Pass serves as permission for students to live in and study in the country legally.

This pass can only be applied for by students through the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA). If it's a private institution, the school must be registered under the Committee for Private Education (CPE). Otherwise your application may get rejected. This could be one reason for the Singapore visa rejection for some students. Before applying, please make sure that the course and school is approved by the government for a Student Pass.

Admission Letter from an Institute

The application for a Student Pass requires you to be offered admission into an approved educational institution in Singapore. The Student Pass application cannot be done without the offer letter. The course should be full-time, as part-time courses are not valid.

Your school will enter your information on the ICA portal and this initiates the entire student visa for Singapore process. So the first and foremost step is to select the suitable institute and the right course. Your course has to be over thirty days and you also need to commit to full-time studies. You must apply for a new Student Pass if you are changing schools/courses.

The SOLAR Application System

SOLAR can be accessed only after your school issues your admission letter and has registered your details. It is the only platform that the Singapore government recognizes for Student Pass application. It is a simple system but requires proper input. The slightest detail can drag or quash the whole process.

  • Log in with the school-assigned registration number to the official portal. Your profile is also associated with the school via this number.

  • You will now fill up the actual application form for Student Pass that is eForm 16.

  • A passport-size photo and other documents have to be uploaded too.

  • Have your passport at hand, as you will have to enter details as they are displayed. Passport number or expiry date is another common cause of delays.

  • You’ll get a copy of your application after submission and you’ll want to hold onto that.

Required Documents for Application

You will be required to have a few key documents to apply.

1. First, your passport must be valid for at least six months.

2. Second is the official admission letter from a Singaporean institution.

3. Third, you will require your academic records and certificates which display your credentials, as well as verify your background.

4. Some require proof of financial resources, too. This is to see that you can sustain in Singapore. This is usually in the form of bank statements or financial guarantee letters. If this is not clear or missing, the chances of your Singapore e-visa getting rejected shot up.

5. You will also need a recent passport-sized photo, typically with a white background.

6. And, any other document requested by the school or ICA should be attached.

Each school’s document requirement may differ slightly, so double-check the document checklist for Singapore visa application.

Medical Check-up and Insurance

There may be students who will have to undergo medical examination after students receive their IPA letter. This check-up tests for health risks or infectious diseases. You must bring the results to ICA (Immigration And Checkpoints Authority) on the day you come to collect your Student pass. Failing to do this soon enough will delay your pass collection.

In addition to medical checks, numerous schools require students to hold valid health insurance. This ensures your well being if you fall sick or face an accident while studying. It’s not a rule; it’s to keep you safe. You will also need insurance; but if you have international insurance, make sure it is accepted in Singapore.

Receiving the In-Principle Approval (IPA)

After your application has been approved with SOLAR, you will need to receive an In-Principle Approval letter from the ICA. This is your access pass to enter Singapore and pick up your Student Pass. You have to have this letter on you while traveling. It also provides the when and where you need to pick up your pass.

An IPA letter is temporary, typically valid for one to two months. If you don’t travel and finish the process in that time, you will have to apply again.

Conclusion

In Singapore, there are clear rules and step-by-step procedures to study in the country. If you stay organized and apply early, the experience can be a breeze. So, follow the rules and have fun in the years that you study in this lively country!
